APC dares Wike, vows to campaign in LGAs
In spite of Governor Nyesom Wike’s restriction on demonstrations in public schools, the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has announced it will still hold rallies in all 23 local government areas.
State APC gubernatorial candidate Tonye Cole issued a statement on Sunday alleging that the governor’s recent issuance of executive order 21 was intended to limit the political space for opposition parties in the state.
In a statement sent by his campaign spokesperson Sogbeye Eli, Cole claimed that each of the 23 LGA chairmen had been instructed to implement the “draconian” order in their respective areas.
Executive Order 21 contains a very harsh command from the Governor, and he has instructed the Chairmen of the State’s 23 Local Government Councils to implement it.
In accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the laws of Rivers State, the APC has agreed to campaign with our candidates throughout the entire state.
We will not be bullied into submission, and we will not accept Executive Order 21’s presentation of a fait accompli to parties other than the Peoples Democratic Party on which they and the Governor were elected.
If the Council Chairmen were to implement that Order in any way, shape, or form, it would be a flagrant violation of our constitutional rights as political parties and as a campaign organization, and we would want to bring this to the attention of those who it may concern.
“We urge them to resist the temptation of exercising power, which can only lead to anarchy as a result of the opposition of the parties and candidates targeted by the offensive Executive Order 21.”
Cole urged party members and Rivers residents to be calm, saying, “In 2023, after nearly a decade in leadership wilderness, where hopelessness, joblessness, and cruelty have been the norm, we will be able to freely choose our own leader.”
“A leader that respects them, understands them, won’t misuse his power, and knows the difference between politics and government.”
“We assert unequivocally that Executive Order 21 is another indication of Wike’s proclivity to crush and stifle dissent in a multiparty democracy instead of enabling citizens to exercise their Constitutional freedom of choice.”
Cole claimed it would be hard for any opposition party, especially the APC, to secure Wike’s consent for the N5million non-refundable charge.
For a man with Wike’s antipathy to social interactions, it will be simpler for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
