Blasphemy: Tension in Borno as another lady receives death threats over Facebook post

Residents of Borno are concerned for the safety of a young Christian woman who is being accused of insulting the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on the social networking website Facebook.

This news comes just a few days after the death of Deborah Samuel, a female student in the 200-level at Shehu Shagari College of Education who was burned to death on the school grounds in connection with allegations that were very similar to these.

The young lady, identified as Naomi Goni, has been placed in protective custody by the police in response to the youths’ statements that they intend to kill her.

Some religious extremists in Borno State have threatened to kill her for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW) on Facebook.

Someone going by the name Abdulmajid Tanko Izge, who called himself the President of Borno Youth Support, has been spreading the word about the danger.

He vowed that the sentence that would be handed down to Naomi would be the death penalty.

In addition, he said, “Naomi, you are responsible for the outcomes.”

As a result of the growing tension that was caused by the killing of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto State on Saturday, the Borno State Police Command convened a peacebuilding meeting at the command’s headquarters in Maiduguri late on Saturday night and continued it into the early hours of Sunday morning.

The meeting’s purpose was to prevent any unrest that might disrupt the peace in an already troubled state in the North-East subregion.

The Commissioner of Police, Abdu Umar, who convened the meeting at the instance of the state government disclosed to The PUNCH shortly after the meeting that an intelligence report indicated that certain elements were already gearing up for a shutdown in the city as a reaction to the incident that occurred in Sokoto State but that his personnel, along with the officers of other security agencies such as the Civil Defense, the DSS, and the military, have been deployed across the state capital to maintain civility.

The meeting was called at the request.
