Strike: ASUU branches set to vote today, Wednesday

Today (Tuesday) and Wednesday (Wednesday) would mark the beginning of traditional voting by Academic Staff Union of Universities branches about the union’s ongoing strike.

The National Executive Council will receive recommendations from each department and make the ultimate call

This latest turn of events follows a meeting with Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the House of Representatives, who reportedly arranged for multiple talks between the union and the side of the Federal Government.

Lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, representing the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria (ASUU), told The PUNCH that the strike would end in a few days.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) began a strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, because, according to the union, the government has failed to address outstanding requests made by the ASUU.

After what he called “failed negotiations,” Minister of Labor and Employment Chris Ngige took the striking professors to the National Industrial Court.

On September 21st, the National Industrial Court mandated that ASUU end their strike.

The government’s notice request was granted, and the court ordered the professors back to the classrooms.

Until the outcome of the federal government’s lawsuit against ASUU, the trial judge, Polycarp Hamman, issued an interlocutory injunction preventing ASUU from continuing with the industrial action.
The union was unhappy with the decision and decided to appeal it.

A motion to halt enforcement of the industrial court’s decision was also submitted.
After ASUU’s motion for a stay of execution of the lower court’s judgment was rejected, the Court of Appeal ordered the striking professors to “immediately” end the eight-month strike.

It confirmed ASUU’s right to challenge the industrial court’s ruling.

The panel agreed with the federal government’s position that ASUU cannot come to the appellate court “with unclean hands,” holding that “should the petitioner refuse to obey the order (of the lower court), the leave granted shall be promptly cancelled.”
