Death reported after police and fans clashed outside the stadium.

A supporter was killed after skirmishes between police and fans that led to the abandonment of a match between Gimnasia and Boca Juniors. This left the Argentine football community in a state of shock.

It was widely reported that the police barred entrances due to fears about overcrowding at the game that took place at the Juan Carmelo Zerillo Stadium in La Plata. This was due to the fact that the event could only be attended by Gimnasia supporters, as away fans were not permitted to enter.

Tear gas was fired and it made its way into the stadium as a result, Cesar Gustavo Regueiro, 57 years old, a supporter, passed away following what is believed to have been a heart-related illness.

Local media in Buenos Aires described Sergio Berni, the minister of security for the city, as alleging that Gimnasia had oversold tickets for the stadium; however, the club disputed that this was the case.

Berni stated the following to TyCSports: “No one wants to be responsible for this, and that is why everything ultimately falls on the police.”

Boca Juniors has expressed their “regret” on the passing of their teammate and have asked for “a profound call for reflection.”

After nine minutes of the first half, the match was called off by the referee, Hernan Mastrangelo, and the Liga Profesional de Ftbol announced that it would be rescheduled for a later date.

Gimnasia is quoted as saying, “We will insist that whatever occurred be examined until the individuals responsible for this awful day are known.”

“The procedures outlined by the security services were followed in their entirety by our club. There was no instance of tickets being sold in excess, and both our business partners and attendees acted appropriately.

The club stated in a subsequent statement that it “repudiates the disproportionate activities of the security forces at the entrance and environs” of the stadium. This was said in reference to the stadium’s location.

Referee Mastrangelo told TyC Sports, “I spoke with the players in the locker room to find out how they were doing, and several of them told me that they were very worried about their relatives who were in the stadium.”  Because the air was so thick that it was impossible to breathe, we never had the physical fortitude to keep playing the match.

This is the very first time that something like this has taken place in my life. It is a circumstance that causes all of us to feel a great deal of sadness.

The Argentine Football Association released the following statement in response to the passing of Cesar Gustavo Regueiro, a supporter of the Gimnasia club, saying, “The AFA, with president Claudio Tapia at its head, mourns the death of Cesar Gustavo Regueiro, and sends its condolences to family and loved ones.”

This tragedy occurred a little less than a week after a stampede at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia claimed the lives of well over one hundred people.
