Rollercoaster rides trigger emergency calls from new iPhones

Some new iPhones have been activated by rollercoasters to make emergency calls.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the plummeting rides at one US amusement park alerted the phones’ crash detection mechanism.

With the updated OS, the capability was added to the new iPhone 14 and Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra, and SE.

According to Apple, the technology is designed to provide “peace of mind” and will continue to improve over time.

Although the collision detection system is a new feature on the iPhone, it has showed its effectiveness by alerting emergency personnel to a fatal accident in Nebraska.

The Pixel phone from Google already features a crash detection system.

Previous WSJ reporting on Apple’s technology being tested in a variety of collisions, including employing the talents of a “demolition derby” driver, did not indicate the system was too sensitive.

The newspaper, on the other hand, was given records of six calls to local emergency services from iPhones whose crash detection system had been triggered while riding attractions at Kings Island amusement park near Cincinnati, Ohio.

An automated message from an iPhone can be heard in a recording of one of the calls acquired by the newspaper, saying: “The owner of this iPhone was in a catastrophic vehicle crash and is not responding to their phone.” The sound of an amusement park can be heard in the background.

Drivers have also claimed occasions in which the accident detection system was activated due to phones being dropped while the vehicle was driving.
