ASUU awaits Buhari on no-work-no-pay, holds NEC meeting
Since its strike began eight months ago, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has been waiting for President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to make a decision on the no-work-no-pay provision imposed by the Federal Government.
The union’s choice on whether or not to end the strike hinges on the President’s decision.
It was also discovered that the President is the sole person who may discharge the arrears of the striking professors.
The problem of no-work-no-pay has not been solved.
At this time, only the President has the power to grant such a waiver. He needs to pardon them. He feels terrible that they made the pupils wait.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday (today), ASUU branches will start consulting about the prospect of ending the strike.
On Thursday, the union’s National Executive Council will discuss the situation.
ASUU’s National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has confirmed the news, saying that the union will hold a meeting to discuss the situation.
Although he mentioned a meeting, he was vague about the time and location.
Osodeke just responded, “Yes, we will meet and take our decision.”
The Academic Staff Union of Uganda (ASUU) began a strike on Monday, February 14, 2022, after the government allegedly refused to satisfy the union’s demands.
After what he called “failed negotiations,” Minister of Labor and Employment Chris Ngige took the striking professors to the National Industrial Court.
On September 21, the court ordered ASUU to end their strike.
Last week, another identical ruling was issued by the Court of Appeal.
